Portuguese 🔆

 Oi!

Were you aware of the fact that European and Brazilian Portuguese are quite different? Yes, they are! I'm pretty sure you thought about it like British and American English, right?

Well, let me tell you the differences between those two.

  • The second person pronoun is one of them. Tu and vós are pretty common in Portugal whereas in Brazil, people hardly ever use them.
  • Brazilian Portuguese is way less formal than European Portuguese.
  • Some words are spell differently.

This language has no conjugations of verbs 😯

Konnichiwa

Are you aware of the numerous ways that a verb can be conjugated either in English, Spanish or French?

Well, in Japanese, this doesn't exist! The verbs only have one main form and that's it.

However, its difficult writing system makes up for this.

Have you ever heard a Japanese person speaking? They would say things like "I saw red car" or "I watched movie last night" Did you notice what these two sentences have in common?

In both sentences, the article is missing! This is because in Japanese language, they don't have any articles!!

Would you like to learn this language knowing about this? Tell me in the comments.

How amazing is French? 🥖

 Bonjour!

Every language has its exceptions when it comes to translation, today we are going to check some French words and phrases that cannot be translated into English.

  • L’espirit d’escalier: This is a universal feeling, something that we all have gone through at some point in our lives. It refers to that exact moment when you are by yourself thinking about that little argument you had with someone and you finally come up with a quick remark.

  • La douler exquise: This term refers to the massive pain in our hearts when we love someone that doesn't love us back.

  • Dépaysement: This means to be out of your comfort zone, and sometimes it also means to be homesick.

  • Ratrucher: It refers to the action of leaving your dish absolutely empty, with no food left.

  • Retrouvailles: It refers to that specific moment when you get to see someone you love after a long time of not seeing them. That feeling of joy and happiness.

  • Ras-le-bol: This term refers to that feeling of "being done" with something, that time when you can't take it anymore. When you have had enough.

These are some of my favorite words, what do you think about them? Have you ever experienced any of them yourself?

The language of space 🚀

Привет

Did you know that Russian is considered the language of space?

Now you are probably wondering how is that so? Well, even though the operating language is English for the International Space Station (ISS); another means of travel to and from the ISS is Russian's Soyuz spacecraft which its operating language is only Russian. Consequently, learning this language is a REQUIREMENT.

Salamo Alaykom 🕊️

مرحبا

Did you know that Arabic language is at least 1500 years old? Making it the sixth most spoken language in the world!

In written Arabic, they have a different system called "Abjad" which is basically a consonant alphabet because each letter represents a consonant rather than a vowel whereas the vowels are represented with marks and not a full letter.

Let's take a look at the abjad:

A Bahá'í Glossary

Something that blew my mind about this language was that it is written from right to left which means that you also have to read it from right to left. Isn't that crazy? Books have to be read from back to front!

What an interesting language, would you like to give it a try and learn it?

Ciao! 👋

Benvenuto

As so many like to call it... The language of love. Italian language is one of the most studied languages by English speakers.

This language only has 21 letters in its alphabet! Imagine never having to use j, k, w, x or y.

I love the fact that this language has some words that as English speakers we cannot just translate them into one word and need a whole explanation for them.

My favorites being:

  • Menefreghista: This word refers to a person that simply doesn't care about what it's being talked about.
  •  Pennichella: This word refers to that nap you take after having lunch.

  •  Pantofolaio: This word refers to the person that would rather stay at home than go out.

How easy is Thai language? 😨

เวลคัม

Have you ever been told that learning Thai was an easy task? Well, first of all let's take a look at the alphabet.

Thai alphabet (Source: Seven Ball on Youtube)

I'm not trying to scare you, but... This alphabet did scare ME. As an English speaker, I've never seen this type of letters.

Another thing to take into consideration is that in this language there are NO SPACES between words... How crazy is that? Imagine yourself trying to read a word but you just don't know where it ends! Also, there is NO capitalization in Thai.

I'm pretty sure that people learning this language really like a good challenge! Tell me in the comments: Would you be willing to learn Thai? Will it be difficult for you?

German language 🤯

Hallo, wilkommen!

German is such an interesting language that keeps amazing me the more I get to know about it, so I felt like I needed to share this information with you.

1. Nouns

Did you know that all the nouns in German are capitalized? As you may know already, in English, only nouns such as names are capitalized but not here! Because every noun needs to begin with a capital letter.

Let's check some examples:

  • Die Frau trinkt Wasser.
  • The woman drinks water

  •  Der Mann isst das Brot.
  • The man eats the bread.

As you could see, in German, any noun will be capitalized and that's a rule!

2. Letters and its sounds

How many of you knew that a w is actually pronounced as v and a v is actually pronounced as ?

So... yes, when the question wie viel (how many) is brought up in a conversation, you will have to think about twice before you say it.

Another letter with different pronunciation is the s and its sound will depend on what letter is next to it, it can sound like a s, z or sh. And let's not forget about z that has a ts sound.

But hey... what do YOU think? Do you think that you will be able to keep up with all those rules and pronunciation? Will it be easy for you?
