Hallo, wilkommen!
1. Nouns
Did you know that all the nouns in German are capitalized? As you may know already, in English, only nouns such as names are capitalized but not here! Because every noun needs to begin with a capital letter.
Let's check some examples:
- Die Frau trinkt Wasser.
- The woman drinks water.
- Der Mann isst das Brot.
- The man eats the bread.
As you could see, in German, any noun will be capitalized and that's a rule!
2. Letters and its sounds
How many of you knew that a w is actually pronounced as v and a v is actually pronounced as f ?
So... yes, when the question wie viel (how many) is brought up in a conversation, you will have to think about twice before you say it.
Another letter with different pronunciation is the s and its sound will depend on what letter is next to it, it can sound like a s, z or sh. And let's not forget about z that has a ts sound.
But hey... what do YOU think? Do you think that you will be able to keep up with all those rules and pronunciation? Will it be easy for you?

Hi Astrid! I didn't know that these rules existed in German, I have never heard about a language that capitalizes all of its nouns! I think that if were learning German, I would get used to capitalizing nouns quickly. On the other hand, I think I would keep thinking about how to pronounce the s in every conversation!
ReplyDeleteHello, emmm I cannot believe that a w and v could sound so different. I think I can make a lot of mistake just for reading, jajjaaj my native language and L2 are fighting against itself.
ReplyDeleteHi, Astrid!! Omg and those were just a few example of many other rules. I think that learning German would be really difficult for me. I am so used to the sounds I know that I would make a lot of mistakes. However, with practice I could master it. (but learning it is not in my plans btw xD)
ReplyDeleteWOW! How complex is the German language! Thank you for informing us of these rules, I really did not know about them.
ReplyDeleteI know two people who speak German, and listening to them made me a very beautiful language, but I did not know that making the pronunciations would make it so complicated. Thank you very much for the tip.
